With a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dr. Massoud has dedicated over two decades to advancing education, research, and innovation at the intersection of technology and systems thinking. His career spans leadership roles in academia and industry, including appointments at MIT, Rice University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), and prestigious organizations like IBM, Synopsys, and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
As Dean of the School of Systems and Enterprises, Dr. Massoud has redefined educational excellence by integrating cutting-edge research with forward-thinking academic programs. Under his stewardship, the school has witnessed record growth in research funding, student enrollment, and scholarly output. He has spearheaded initiatives that emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing students to tackle complex global challenges by blending systems engineering, artificial intelligence, and data science into modern curricula. Prior to his tenure at Stevens, Dr. Massoud served as the Head of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) from 2012 to 2017. His leadership transformed the department into a hub of innovation and impact, with substantial growth in research expenditures, industrial partnerships, and enrollment. His strategic efforts also led to a remarkable 26-position rise in the U.S. News & World Report rankings for the department, underscoring his commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
Dr. Massoud’s foundational academic journey began at Rice University, where he held dual appointments in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science (CS) departments. He earned tenure in under four years—an extraordinary accomplishment—and played a pivotal role as Chair of the ECE graduate programs. His work at Rice exemplified his ability to blend cutting-edge research with transformative educational practices, inspiring students to explore new frontiers in technology and engineering.
Throughout his career, Dr. Massoud has championed interdisciplinary research as a cornerstone of innovation. He has been a principal investigator (PI) or co-PI on projects totaling over $53 million in funding from esteemed organizations such as DARPA and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Dr. Massoud’s commitment to education extends beyond administrative leadership achievements.
